This is a tenure-track position. The contract runs until 31 October 2029 and includes an evaluation agreement: if the goals stipulated in the agreement are achieved, the position will be made permanent after five years, and there is also the option to upgrade it to full-time (100%), subject to the availability of financial resources.

Your sphere of action:

Your future job is at the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History, one of the world’s leading centres for academic teaching and scholarly research on coinage and the monetary economy of the ancient, medieval and modern world.

Your future tasks:
  • You are the curator of the “Central Card File” („Numismatische Zentralkartei“, NZK) of the department, containing images of – and information on – about 1.5 million coins and related objects and of the collection of catalogues of the international coin trade, from the 19th century to the present day.
  • Together with the team of the department, you develop a strategy for digitising the Central Card File and start implementing it.
  • You look after national and international users of the Central Card File and respond to enquiries regarding material on file.
  • You make sure that the catalogue collection is up to date and try to fill in gaps in the holdings, mainly by exchanging material with our international partners.
  • You oversee the digitisation of the department’s numismatic study collection and are responsible for the IT side of the department’s Digital Coin Cabinet (https://ikmk-ing.univie.ac.at/home)
  • You are the department’s representative in national and international initiatives regarding digital numismatics (e.g. in the collaboration with http://nomisma.org/).
  • You support research projects at the department with your digital expertise.
  • You give courses in your area of expertise, according to the requirements specified in the collective agreement for Senior Scientists, and develop concepts for e-teaching at the department.
  • You assist with administration in research and teaching as required.
Your personal profile:
  • PhD in Digital Humanities, or in Informatics, or in the Humanities/Social Sciences.
  • In case of a PhD in the Humanities/Social Sciences: proven expertise in IT, ideally with a focus on digital numismatics
  • Previous experience in the numismatic field
  • Didactic competence
  • Ability to work in a team and communication skills
  • Languages: German, English; further language skills desirable
What we offer:

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 2175,95 (14 times a year for senior scientists postdoctoral, part time 50%) increases, if we can credit professional experience.

The contract will initially be for 5 years. As part of the hiring process, an evaluation agreement will be concluded between the position holder and the faculty and the assigned institute for the duration of the contract. Upon fulfillment of this agreement, the employment will be made permanent. Additionally, there is the option of an upgrade to a full-time position (100%), subject to the availability of financial resources.
