The Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), the largest nonuniversity establishment for fundamental research in Austria, is offering a
(full-time, 40h per week)
in the research group “Historical Archaeology in the Mediterranean” (Head: M. Steskal) of the Department of Historical Archaeology.
The Austrian Archaeological Institute is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and ancient studies. We study human history from the Quaternary period to modern times, taking into account material archaeological sources and the written tradition. The research group »Historical Archaeology in the Mediterranean« functions as a platform for inter- and transdisciplinary research approaches that deal with issues of the ancient cultural and intellectual history of the Mediterranean, including material archaeological and written sources. The chronological frame covers the period from the Iron Age through classical Greco-Roman antiquity to late antiquity. The focus of current research is placed on the study of forms, functions, and developments of urban and rural settlement areas under historical, topographic, architectural, economic, social, and ecological aspects.
Your tasks:Collaborative field research within the framework of the Department's research programme and with a focus on the research in Ephesos
Establishment and implementation of own research projects within the framework of the Department's research programme
Acquisition of third-party funds at national and European level
Dissemination of research findings in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets and in the context of lectures, workshops and conferences
Participation in the institute’s science communication activities
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Classical Archaeology or in a related field of archaeology/historical building research
Outstanding research expertise and publication record in the fields of Classical Archaeology and/or Historical Building Research
Extensive experience in the application of field archaeological methods and willingness to expand your methodological approaches
Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds
Experience in project management
Experience in science communication
Full professional proficiency in English and German
Flexibility, the ability to work in a team, openness in scientific exchange and the willingness to undertake longer research stays abroad
Driver’s license Class B
This position starts on January 01st, 2025 and is advertised for 2 years with a tenure option if the future holder of the position is particularly suitable. The annual gross salary for this position is € 72.931,60, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
