The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) is a world-leading research institute in the field of theoretical astrophysics. A first-class IT infrastructure is of central importance for the scientific success of the institute. Therefore, the MPA is looking for a Head of the IT department Reference number 03/2024 The position includes the following tasks: Technical and disciplinary management and further development of a small team of IT specialists Active participation in the development of an institute-wide IT strategy Organizational management of the IT department of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics Ensuring a modern, efficient and secure IT infrastructure, taking into account data protection and risk management Supporting and advising employees on all relevant IT topics Ongoing modernization, expansion and maintenance of the in-house Linux system to provide optimal support for researchers Support of the in-house institute computer center with Linux clusters (approx. 5,000 computing cores) and approx. 150 workstations Operation and further development of large data storage systems and a high-performance network infrastructure Supporting scientists in the selection and procurement of new hardware and software We expect you to: Completed university degree in computer science, natural sciences, information technology or equivalent qualification Several years of professional experience Excellent knowledge of Linux, basic knowledge of macOS and Windows Willingness to actively communicate with scientists Excellent written and spoken German and English skills Willingness to work in a team and continuously discuss strategic and operational IT issues Enjoy working in an international and intercultural environment Structured, reliable and service-oriented way of working Desirable: Several years of IT experience in a scientific environment Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) Our offer to you: An interesting and varied job in an internationally oriented research environment As part of a permanent employment contract, we offer you a transparent salary in accordance with the TVöD Bund (classification depends on qualifications and professional experience) with all the benefits of the public sector, such as an attractive pension scheme (VBL) and a guaranteed annual special payment We promote your personal development through a variety of targeted training measures You will work in a dynamic team with short decision-making processes and flat hierarchies We offer you 30 days' vacation per year Support in finding child and family care Private accident insurance within a framework contract for all employees Good accessibility by public transport (subway and bus) A subsidy for the IsarCardJob ticket and the Deutschlandticket Sufficient free parking spaces are also available Have we piqued your interest?
