The Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) and the University of Klagenfurt is offering a

PHD STUDENT POSITION (F/M/X)

(part-time, 30h per week)

in the Research Group Science Communication and Science Journalism (SCSJ), starting October 1st, 2024 or as soon as possible. The work contract will be limited to 36 months and can be extended. The research group investigates dynamics of science communication and science journalism regarding media change, social change as well as societal challenges (e.g. technological innovations, misinformation, climate change, etc.). The research group integrates macro-, meso- and micro-level perspectives, with a special focus on Austria in international comparison.

Your tasks:

We are looking for a researcher who is committed to the RG's fields of study and wants to pursue a doctorate in the areas of science communication/science journalism. Your tasks will include contributing to our research, supporting the development of the group, for example by assisting with third-party funding applications, and uncovering practice- relevant results from the research field through systematic literature reviews.

Your profile:
  • Excellent master’s degree in communication science or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and an ambition to continue to develop these skills
  • Knowledge of the Austrian and international field of science communication research and practice
  • Willingness to develop a doctoral thesis related to science communication/science journalism research
  • Above-average communication skills and proficiency in German and English (oral and written)
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Capacity for independent, planned and results oriented work
  • Good cooperative skills
  • Project management skills are an advantage

The position entails research under supervision as well as conference presentations and publications in national and international scientific journals.

We offer an annual gross salary of € 37.773,33, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Within the newly established research group SCSJ you will be able to participate in collaborative projects and conduct independent research to position yourself in the dynamic and young research field and to further your academic career. We support participation in national and international conferences and networking in research and practice. We can offer to work with flexible work time arrangements.
