The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/X)

(full-time, 40h per week)

for one year, starting November 01, 2024 or soon after this date.

The position is part of the ERC-funded consolidator project TibSchol - "The Dawn of Tibetan Buddhist Scholasticism (11th– 13thc.)" (H2020-CoG-101001002), which aims at a wide-ranging exploration of the formative phase of the Tibetan Buddhist scholastic tradition. The position is for research on the scholastic landscape within the sub-projects “Persons, schools, and networks in early Tibetan scholasticism” and “Early Tibetan scholastic literature: the corpus, its constitution and diffusion.” You will contribute to the mapping of networks of early scholastic thinkers and investigate their ties to learning institutions and the range of their writing and learning activities.

Your tasks:
  • Explore a broad range of historical sources in Tibetan
  • Participate in data input and curation of the project’s prosopographical database
  • Publish at the highest scientific level (at least one article in a peer-reviewed journal is expected during the employment period)
  • Present research findings at academic events
  • Support the organization of academic events and activities related to the project
Your profile:
  • Completed doctoral degree in Buddhist Studies or Tibetan Studies
  • Experience in historical research involving Tibetan narrative sources (biographies, chronicles, monastic annals, etc.) in original language, demonstrated in publications and/or MA/PhD thesis; experience with sources in cursive script an advantage.
  • Deep familiarity with the early Tibetan religious and scholarly context, the formation of Buddhist schools, the developments of monastic institutions, and the dynamics of intellectual exchanges. Familiarity with the relevant textual corpus as well as research in the field
  • Capacity to carry out research independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken) and strong inter-personal skills
  • Skills in the use of digital humanities tools and high computer literacy (experience with TEI a plus)

The annual gross salary according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is

€ 66.501,40 (before taxes). Funding for attending conferences is available.
