Our Company

At Boehringer Ingelheim we develop breakthrough therapies and innovative healthcare solutions in areas of unmet medical need for both humans and animals. As a family owned company, we focus on long-term performance. We believe that, if we have talented and ambitious people who are passionate about innovation, there is no limit to what we can achieve; after all, we started with just 28 people. Now, we are powered by 50,000 employees globally who nurture a diverse, collaborative and inclusive culture.

The position

Modern life science labs consume large amounts of single use plastic materials, creating significant logistical, supply chain and environmental impact issues. At Boehringer Ingelheim, we want to discover the best possible disease treatments, while at the same time making an impactful effort to reduce our plastic consumption and CO2 footprint. This creates important decision-making challenges at the interface between biotechnology, quality control, and process & material sciences.

This research project within the High-Throughput Biology Group in Vienna focusses on the evaluation and in-depth analysis of a novel pipette tip and multi-well plate washing system. Multiple consumable types and use scenarios with biochemical and cellular assays will be evaluated and rigorously analyzed to compare single- and multi-use experimental workflows. The results will be put in the context of environmental impact, cost-benefit, and operational considerations.

The internship position (10 months duration) should start ideally as soon as possible, but in Q1/2025 at the latest.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Perform basic biochemical and cell culture experiments in a research laboratory setting.
  • Collect and document scientific data through standardized software tools.
  • Survey and evaluate experimental workflows to minimize waste generation and optimize performance.
  • Analyze data using statistical tools to monitor and compare performance across different assay types, runs, and other conditions to identify operating optima.
  • Present your results within the department.

Requirements

  • BSc Degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Green Chemistry, Environmental / Resource / Process Science, or related fields of study.
  • Hands-on experience with wet laboratory work (i.e., pipetting, plate readers, cell culture) with strong interest in statistical analysis and data science.
  • Creative drive to investigate the capability boundaries of a new technology in the context of a high-throughput drug discovery research setting.
  • Precise and reproducible work- and documentation-style.
  • Fluent in English and good communication skills.

Your Benefits

  • Flexible working time models/home office depending on the position
  • Additional off-days (bridge-days) for more leisure time
  • Staff restaurant with a variety of lunch options for your daily well-being
  • Position specific training opportunities for your personal and professional growth
  • Comprehensive health promotion, sustaining your health in the best possible way

The minimum gross annual salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for this position is EUR 38.160,22 (full time), although the actual salary is based on your technical skills and personal competencies as well as your professional experience.
