Organizational Setting
The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA’s duties and responsibilities as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The primary role of the Department is to develop and implement IAEA safeguards to ensure that there is no diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful activities and no indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities in a State as a whole.
The Department comprises nuclear safeguards inspectors, responsible for carrying out inspections and verifications of all-safeguards relevant information for nuclear facilities in over 180 States; and technical staff responsible for a wide range of activities including\: developing concepts and approaches for implementing safeguards; developing and maintaining safeguards equipment; providing analytical and laboratory services for sample analysis; collecting, evaluating and analysing safeguards-relevant information; providing information and communication technology infrastructure and services; and providing programme coordination support.
Within the Office of the Deputy Director General, the Section for Safeguards Programme Coordination (SPC) is the principal advisory body supporting the Department’s management. The Section provides coordination and support in the areas of safeguards implementation, programme and budget, human resources, performance monitoring, effectiveness evaluation, communication, and in formulation and execution of departmental policies and procedures.
Main Purpose
Under the close supervision of the Section Head and in close collaboration with the SG Technical Divisions, the Associate Safeguards Officer supports verification activities of the Department of Safeguards by carrying out duties and responsibilities within one of the technical divisions. The overall responsibilities of these divisions are as follows:
• Division of Technical and Scientific Services (SGTS)\: manages the provision and development of state-of-the-art equipment and related technical and scientific expertise in support of Safeguards verification activities
• Division of Safeguards Analytical Services (SGAS)\: responsible for the analysis of nuclear material and environmental samples and the Network of Analytical Laboratories
• Division of Information Management (SGIM)\: deals with data collection, information analysis and knowledge generation
• Division of Information and Communication Systems (SGIS)\: develops and maintains information and communication technology (ICT) systems and manages all ICT infrastructure and services
• Division of Concepts and Planning (SGCP)\: develops safeguards concepts and approaches, implements quality management, plans and coordinates resource mobilization, and delivers safeguards training
• Section for Programme Coordination (SPC)\: supports Departmental management in the areas of performance monitoring, safeguards implementation and management coordination
Role
The Associate Safeguards Officer is\: (1) a team member, providing assistance, under close supervision, to the Section and the Technical Divisions in support of the safeguards verification activities; and (2) a collaborator compiling information to support the team members in making recommendations on a range of internal Departmental processes as required, as well as in support of maintaining or enhancing existing software applications, services and products that support the work of the Department.

- information management activities, such as performing consistency and completeness checks of State declarations, performing statistical analyses and evaluations of in-field results, collecting and analyzing open source information and satellite imagery data, contributing to data science and innovation projects,
- the developments and maintenance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems and providing support with all ICT infrastructure and services,
- the development of safeguards concepts and approaches, quality management, planning and coordination of resource mobilization and delivery of safeguards training,
- the Departmental management in the areas of performance monitoring, safeguards implementation and management coordination.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Bachelor's Degree - University degree in science (e.g. physics, chemistry), technology (e.g. nuclear, mechanical or other engineering), statistics, remote sensing/geography, non-proliferation, information analysis, ICT, business or international relations.
Working experience and/or additional training in one of the technical areas in the pipeline is an asset.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $39401 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 23562*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
