The St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute () is searching for an outstanding scientist and leader in children’s cancer research to serve as the Institute’s new Scientific Director.

Description of the Institute

The CCRI, in conjunction with the St. Anna Children´s Hospital, is a leading pediatric hematology/oncology research and treatment center in Europe. The CCRI and St. Anna Children´s Hospital uniquely and successfully combine their expertise in groundbreaking basic and clinical research to fundamentally advance diagnostics, clinical trial management, and patient-tailored clinical care.

The CCRI is an established research institution run by an independent charity, and largely funded by charitable donations as well as external research grants. The core mission of the CCRI is to improve treatment outcomes of childhood cancers through research. Its major strength lies in the close interaction with the adjacent clinical departments, supported by day-to-day interactions with a highly skilled and enthusiastic team of clinicians, the resulting continuous exposure to clinical questions, and access to clinical samples. As such, the CCRI has established itself as a national and international reference center for pediatric oncology.

The institute is committed to outstanding research (ERC grant level) and strongly dedicated to clinical translation and clinical trial management. With Labdia () as an associated subsidiary, the CCRI serves as an accredited reference diagnostic center for Austrian and international patients and national/international sponsor of multicenter trials.

The CCRI currently hosts 15 research groups with around 230 investigators, students and supporting staff. Located near the campus of the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital, the CCRI is part of a major biomedical and clinical research cluster in the center of Vienna, a city with a large and vibrant biomedical research community that encompasses collaboration partners from outstanding local research institutes, such as the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM), the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP).

The CCRI is equipped with state-of-the-art cell and molecular biology equipment, flow cytometry, next generation sequencing, confocal microscopy, zebrafish, bioinformatics and high-performance computing core facilities, a GMP facility, and access to small animal facilities. A large clinical study center spearheads international clinical trials as well as most national pediatric oncologic clinical trials and investigator-driven treatment protocols.

Description of the Position

The Scientific Director will have a central role in shaping the scientific and operative profile of the Institute. The successful candidate will identify and develop strategically important (new) research areas, orchestrate the recruitment of faculty and talents, establish strong teams, represent the Institute to the community and participate in fundraising events. It is expected that the new Scientific Director establishes an excellent scientific environment, supports Principal Investigators, and fosters collaboration and teamwork within the institute and with clinicians at the St. Anna Children's Hospital.

Besides having direct responsibility for the entire experimental research, the scientific administrative staff and graduate programs, the Scientific Director is also expected to pursue their own research program along the institutional goals.

Candidate Qualification and Experience

We are looking for an internationally recognized expert in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology, with influential publications on the biological foundations of childhood cancers and a demonstrated commitment to clinical translation.

Formal requirements are a MD and/or PhD degree, international research experience and a proven track record of successfully acquiring competitive third-party funding. Moreover, candidates should have experience in the development and management of scientific programs, team building, and interdisciplinary networks involving clinical and basic research groups.
