At the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna seeks to appoint a
Tenure-Track Professor in the field of Historical dimensions of the Anthropocene
Research and teaching in the field of economic, social and cultural history are carried out in an integrative manner at the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies. The advertised position is part of the key research areas “Economy and Society from a Historical and Cultural Studies Perspective” and “Global History”. The successful candidate will be internationally recognised in the field of research that addresses the relationship between human and non-human life on planet Earth (“more-than-human history”) and in particular the interactions between human, Earth and natural history. The candidate’s research should focus on the implications for our view of the past that arise from current debates in the natural, social and cultural sciences about the onset and the driving forces of a new geological age in which human beings become the determining force in the evolution of life on the planet. The candidate will work in the field of pre-modern, modern or contemporary history and will contribute to the theoretical and methodological reconceptualisation of historical chronologies and epochal boundaries, to the reflection on the relationship of classical archives to the archives of “nature”, and to the question of the planetary scale across classical epochal and spatial boundaries. They have a fundamental understanding of earth system sciences (“scientific literacy”) and are able to enter into a transdisciplinary dialogue with them.

The Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies promotes an integrative approach in conducting research and teaching in the fields of economic history, social history and cultural history, as well as – across history departments – didactics of history. It analyses and teaches economic, social and cultural developments at a local, regional, national and global scale up to present day. Other relevant research contexts at the University of Vienna are the earth system sciences and the Environment and Climate Research Hub.
