The Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), the largest non- university basic research institution in Austria, is offering a position as
ACADEMY SCIENTIST (F/M/X)
(full-time / 40h per week)
in the “Ancient Legal History and Papyrology” research group of the Department of Classical Studies.
In accordance with the focus of the Department, the academy scientist is expected to carry out historical and legal- historical analysis and evaluation in particular of epigraphic and/or papyrological documentary source material. Expertise in the text-critical handling and interpretation of epigraphic and/or papyrological documents as well as in their legal and historical analysis is required.
Your tasks: - Design, implementation and publication of a self-selected research project with legal-historical research questions. The project should have a conceptual approach and be chronologically located in the Greco-Roman era. The publication/the manuscript of the research results is expected to be completed and submitted by the end of the contract.
- Participation in the activities of the “Ancient Legal History” working group.
- Dissemination of the results of the personal research project as well as of the research activities of the “Ancient Legal History” working group by way of publication, electronic and on paper.
- Public outreach by blogs and pod-casts on the platforms of the OeAI and OeAW.
Your profile: - A completed PhD in Classical Studies (ancient history, classical philology, etc.).
- A distinct research profile in Ancient History, Ancient Legal History, Papyrology and or Epigraphy
- A distinguished publication record
- Excellent knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek
- Fluent German and English, advanced language skills in other modern languages (required for the relevant research literature)
- An interest in interdisciplinarly research topics in the field of Ancient Studies
- A willingness to collaborate across and beyond disciplines

- An annual gross salary of € 66.501,40, according to the OeAW’s collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
The position is advertised for a period until the end of 2026. The aim is to start the contract with February 2025.
