PhD Student Position (f/m/x) - CMC

The Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) and the University of Klagenfurt is offering a

PHD STUDENT POSITION (F/M/X)

(part-time, 20-30h per week)

in the Horizon Europe Project “Fostering capacity building for civic resilience and participation: Dialogic communication ethics and accountability” (DIACOMET), managed by the research Group “Media Accountability and Media Change (MAMC)”. The project aims to generate a concept of dialogic communication ethics, which would provide a framework for an inclusive model of accountability mechanisms that combine media accountability (the level of organizations) with civic accountability (the level of citizens). DIACOMET proposes to establish a European network of civic accountability bodies for supporting individuals, groups and organizations to implement a set of Principles of Good Communication Conduct, and to assist in managing ethical issues emerging in public communication.

We are looking for researchers willing to support data collection, particularly through qualitative interviews, data analysis and the coordination of dissemination activities. The positions entail research under supervision as well as international presentations and publications in international scientific journals.

• Master’s degree in communication science or a closely related field
• Very good knowledge of the Austrian media market
• Experience in conducting qualitative research in media organizations or with media users
• Project management skills are an advantage
• Fluency in German and English, both written and spoken
• Good communication skills
• Willingness to cooperate and to work team-oriented

We offer an employment contract (50-75%) for a maximum of 17 months (i.e. until the end of the current Horizon project on May 31st, 2026). The annual gross annual salary is a minimum of € 25.182,22 for a 50% position and € 37.773,33 for a 75% position, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The position may be extended if further third-party funding is obtained.

CMC is located in the city center of Vienna (Bäckerstraße 13, 1010 Wien) and we can offer flexible work time arrangements.
