The position:

You will work as a project assistant (Predoc) in the FWF funded project “Categorizing, Registering and Reporting of Mobility and Stay”. This project deals with registration practices (Meldewesen) in Austria from around 1850 to 1938. You can find more detailed information on the content and objectives of the project here [LINK].

Your future tasks:

Your work will include library and archival research, data collection and analysis, presentations, publishing, and organizing an international conference. You will be given the opportunity and support to develop and implement a dissertation project within the framework of the project or a sub-topic of the project.

Your academic profile:
  • You have an excellent MA degree in history or a related subject, have very good knowledge of the history of mobility, administration, and/or police work in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • You have experience in archival work, are familiar with current concepts and methods of economic and social history; knowledge of descriptive statistics and/or methods of digital humanities (e.g. QGIS) would be an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of German is a requirement. Knowledge of written and spoken English is an important working basis; knowledge of other languages of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy would be a particular advantage.
