The Acoustics Research Institute (ARI), an interdisciplinary research institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research facility, undertakes top-level research in auditory cognitive neuroscience, psychoacoustics and experimental audiology, phonetics, bioacoustics, physical and computational acoustics, mathematics and signal processing as well as machine learning in acoustics. The close interaction of the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergistic effects of multidisciplinary research. The institute employs ~50 academic, technical and administrative staff. The institute is offering a

Postdoc Position (F/m/x)

(full-time, 40h per week)

This position is associated with the FWF project "LIOON – Localization (of) Operators and Operator Reconstruction". The project is concerned with studying uncertainty principles for operators through the lenses of quantum harmonic analysis and localization operators. This perspective on localization of operators will also be used to develop novel methods that allow to reconstruct operators as a whole or certain characteristic features. As such, the project covers various topics in functional analysis, ranging from localization operators, quantum harmonic analysis to operator reconstruction and identification. The successful candidate will cooperate with the PI Dr. Michael Speckbacher, the local project team and the external partners on selected project tasks which can be negotiated depending on their expertise.

Your tasks:
  • Developing new methods to study uncertainty and localization of operators as well as extending existing methods to study spectral properties of localization operators.
  • Cooperate with LIOON's internal and external team members on various project tasks.
  • Communication of scientific results in scientific publications and at scientific meetings.
Your profile:
  • A PhD degree (or equivalent) in mathematics.
  • Prior experience in harmonic analysis, frame theory, and/or operator theory. A background in the analysis of localization operators is of advantage.
  • A competitive and promising track-record appropriate to the applicants' career stage, reflecting your expertise in the abovementioned field(s).
  • Willingness to work in a team.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of written and oral English

The position is limited to 6 months, with the possibility of extension to a maximum duration of 9 months. It is available from February, 2025. If necessary, a later starting date can be negotiated.

The annual gross salary is € 66.501,40, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Candidates should send a CV, copies of relevant certificates, and a brief statement describing your motivation to join this project, personal qualification, and research interests by e-mail to Michael Speckbacher (michael.speckbacher@oeaw.ac.at), no later than December 31st, 2024. Please send your informal inquiries and questions to the same address. The first round of evaluation will start in January 2025.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
