2 Student Employees (all genders)

in research and administration | each 20 hours/week | limited to 6 months TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.

At the Institute of Information Systems Engineering, the Business Informatics Research Group at the TU Wien, we are looking for 2 student employees with a committed personality for an initial period of 6 months, with a possible extension with another 6 months (but no longer than the completion of the Master's or Diploma program) in the research area described below.

Conceptual models are a cornerstone for information systems engineering. They provide the semantical base to define the underlying data structures (be it a relational database, a graph-based database, etc). Not only in the context of traditional administrative information systems, but including so-called process aware information systems, data-driven AI applications, as well as modern-day digital twins.

Creating conceptual models is therefore a critical task within information systems engineering. As such, it needs methodical support, where our research (and teaching) foresees the integration of two key ingredients. Firstly, the use of thinking-aloud based strategies to engage domain experts in the creation, and validation, of conceptual models. Secondly, using foundational ontologies to “harden” the semantic quality and depth of the resulting conceptual models.

We are presently looking for two motivated student employees to aid us in the development of methodical, and tool, support for conceptual modelling, as well as the development of associated teaching material.

Tasks:

You will be engaged in one or more of the following tasks (the list of tasks is not exhaustive). We can further tailor the tasks to your background and personal interests:

  • Investigate a deeper integration of think-aloud protocols in conceptual modelling processes
  • Investigate a deeper integration of foundational ontologies, and ontology engineering, in conceptual modelling processes
  • Investigate the linkage between general (fact-based) conceptual modelling notations and domain specific modelling notations used for e.g. value-aware, transaction-aware or process-aware information systems
  • The development of teaching materials for conceptual modelling, in terms of e.g. exercises and assignments
  • Investigate, and experiment with, tooling for (fact-based) conceptual modelling
Your profile:
  • Enrolment in a relevant study programme in the field of computer science, business informatics, information systems, data science, software engineering; No completed master's or diploma degree in the subject area
  • Basic knowledge of conceptual modelling, as well as willingness to familiarize yourself with different modeling techniques and approaches
  • Interest in scientific work and publishing
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate
We offer:
  • Insights into future-oriented research areas
  • Diverse and exciting range of tasks
  • Flexible working hours
  • A range of attractive social benefits (see Fringe-Benefit Catalogue of TU Wien)
