We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join our research team in the field of sponge-microbe interactions.

The Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The PhD student will be part of the Nitrification group under the supervision of Prof. Michael Wagner and Dr. Bettina Glasl. The successful candidate will conduct research, experiments and write research papers on sponge-microbe interactions with a strong focus on ammonia-oxidizing archaea.

The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension.

• Visualization of sponge symbionts using fluorescence and chemical imaging (i.e. NanoSIMS)
• Spatial visualization of secondary metabolites using MALDI imaging
• Field- and laboratory experiments
• Data analysis
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences
• Supervision of trainees and students
  

• Diploma or master’s degree in biology or microbiology
• Excellent command of written and spoken English

• with confocal and epifluorescence microscopy
• with microbial cultivation
• in handling and working with aquatic animal hosts and aquarium-based experiments
• in sequencing data analysis
