Three disciplines - one goal: The Vienna Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences (VDS-PhaNuSpo) at the University of Vienna offers doctoral students a scientific education at the highest level. It is the largest doctoral training programme in Austria encompassing the three disciplines of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Sport Sciences and brings together about 160 doctoral candidates and 45 Principal Investigators. Our aim is to attract outstanding students from around the world, to train excellent scientists and guide them towards research at the forefront of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences, to provide an open-minded environment that allows for networking, and to experience a vibrant and dynamic community to carry out interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research in the heart of Europe.

Within the International Call for PhD Positions 2025, VDS-PhaNuSpo offers 12 exciting PhD projects in all areas of pharmaceutical sciences.The four-year positions can be filled as soon as possible, preferably no later than the start of the winter semester on 1 October 2025. Your future tasks:

We expect the successful candidate to complete the public presentation (FÖP) and the doctoral agreement within 12 months at the latest and to actively participate in research, teaching and administration, which means:

  • You participate in research projects/studies.
  • You present your research findings in peer-reviewed publications and at conferences.
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You participate in teaching and independent teaching of courses within the scope of the collective agreement.
  • You participate in the co-supervision of Masters students.
  • You contribute to the department administration as well as to teaching and research administration.
  • You become a member of the VDS-PhaNuSpo and actively participate in its activities.
Your personal sphere of influence:
  • PhaNuSpo#1- Konrad: 1 PhD position in the group of Ass.-Prof. Dr. David B. Konrad at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
    Doctoral project on "Studying and Overcoming the H2O2-Induced Resistance towards Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors in Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer". The project will lay the foundation for the development of covalent inhibitors that target H2O2 signaling pathways which are employed to study and overcome the resistances imparted by this second messenger to EGFR inhibitors in advanced NSCLC. A successful applicant will harness state-of-the-art chemical biology methods at the intersection of medicinal chemistry and molecular biology including the cutting-edge chemoproteomics technology.
  • PhaNuSpo#2- Kopp: 1 PhD position in the group of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Florian Kopp, group leader of the Clinical Pharmacy Group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
    Doctoral project on "Non-coding RNA in stress-related metabolic disease: physiological role and therapeutic application". This project explores the role of a noncoding RNA in metabolic stress and its therapeutic potential, utilizing in vitro cell-based and in vivo mouse models. The research incorporates advanced molecular and biochemical techniques to investigate these pathways.

  • On the same website you will find all information on the PhD positions AIDD#1 - AIDD#10 of the "Anti-Infective Drug Discovery (AIDD) doctoral training project", led by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and funded by the FWF-doc:fund. This cohort of students will train together on interrelated topics in the field of anti-infective drug discovery. The programme will start in the second half of 2025 and is embedded in the doctoral training of the VDS-PhaNuSpo. Graduates interested in drug discovery are encouraged to apply to the AIDD programme. The language of the doctoral school is English; therefore English is required, German is an advantage.

You have a completed Master's degree (or equivalent) that is relevant to the selected position:

  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology / Molecular Biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Biophysics / Structural Biology
  • Informatics, etc.

We expect from all applicants:

  • Deep interest in and enthusiasm for scientific work.
  • A critical and analytical mind.
  • Strong communication, data presentation and visualisation skills.
  • Ability to work, both independently and collaboratively.
  • An asset: experience in writing scientific publications.

Further assets for PhaNuSpo#2-Kopp:

  • Experience in working with mammalian cells and mice and having knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience in biochemical and histological analysis methods.

Fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 3,714,80 (on a full-time basis) increases if we can credit professional experience.
