Researcher in land-energy nexus topics
The , within the IIASA is looking for a researcher to contribute to the Spatially-explicit Energy and LAnd system InfrastRUcture optimization model ( modelling framework) supporting research on follow-up topics related to Indonesia's clean energy transition assessment (see ).

The AFE Research Group strives to generate knowledge and develop state-of-the-art modeling tools with the objective of advancing the scientific community and supporting policy stakeholders in their effort to better understand and manage global and regional land systems.
To complement the ongoing research agenda on nature-based climate solutions, AFE addresses topics related to the land-energy nexus to investigate land system implications of varying energy system transition options and identify potential synergies for specific climate change mitigation measures/policy recommendations.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of the SELARU modeling framework and related software tools, documentation, and datasets.
- Implement and process results of SELARU model scenarios (including data visualization) to meet scientific assessment needs for topics related to Indonesia’s clean energy transition.
- Conduct literature reviews and background research to support scientific assessment on topics related to Indonesia’s clean energy transition.
- Process and compile spatial and other relevant publicly available datasets related to Indonesia’s land and energy systems.
- Contribute to the writing of manuscripts for scientific publications on topics related to Indonesia’s clean energy transition.
Requirements
- Min. master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) with some experience in a topic related to energy system modeling or land use economic modeling plus a strong interest in pursuing a career in science.
- Familiarity with GAMS modelling environment and R coding language. Experience in parallel computing and version control (e.g., Git) as an advantage.
- Familiarity with spatial data processing and analyses (using e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS or R).
- Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated capability to work independently and respond to deadlines in a timely manner.
- Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required; proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is advantageous.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to work in a diverse, collaborative environment.

Appointment terms
The selected candidate should be available to take up the position in July 2025. We offer an initial fixed-term, two-year, full-time (40 hours per week) employment contract, with the possibility of extension thereafter. Eligible applicants wishing to work part-time hours may be considered.
